UK misses renewable energy goal, putting 2020 target in danger

Posted by refer on 15/04/11

The U.K. will more than likely miss a goal set by the European Union to obtain 15 percent of its energy supply from renewable sources by 2020, research groups have announced this week.

“Failure to meet the much-discussed 2010 target, in spite of very high levels of consumer subsidy, is a clear indication that the EU 2020 goals are impractical and unaffordable,” said John Constable, policy and research director for the Renewable Energy Foundation. “We need an urgent rethink.”

Last year the U.K. generated 6.5 percent of its electricity from renewable energy, coming up short of the 10% target that had been set by the former Labour party leadership.

UK urged not to crush the “solar revolution”

Posted by refer on 15/04/11

Britain’s most influential environmental experts are urging the Government not to crush what they are calling the “solar revolution”.

Environmental groups are claiming that the UK has the lowest solar ambitions amongst their major EU counterparts, and the government have been blamed for not fully supporting plans by green energy companies for large scale solar farms.

Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the Renewable Energy Association have joined forces with green energy companies, and they released a statement to call for action.”Given our economic situation, surely we should seize green growth with both hands. Instead our solar ambitions are weakening.”

The government so far has only replied by saying its policy is to try to ensure that all technologies get their fair share of funding.

Great plans for Germany’s wind industry

Posted by refer on 14/04/11

The FAZ reported that the future of the wind industry has been developed in the past five years at a research institute in Denmark.

The EU-funded project named UpWind gathered forty companies from eleven European countries to join efforts to bring forward the concept for a mega turbine. UpWind shows that the wind industry has not yet exhausted all its possibilities. Stephan Ritter, general manager of GE’s wind business in Europe, stresses that the aim is not always about maximizing output, pointing out that smaller 1.6-MW turbines were much more competitive at sites with limited grid capacity and acknowledging that there was a tendency to design bigger towers, which enabled the smart generation of electricity also at weak wind sites.

Hermann Albers, president of the Wind Energy Association (BWE) called for more wind energy facilities in southern Germany to meet the nations demand for electricity. “Wind power in this country can easily replace nuclear energy” – He announced confidently.

Ultimately, wind energy could easily cover up to 65 percent of the electricity demand in Germany, Albers explained with reference to a study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy and Wind Energy Systems Technology (IWES).

But Albers also urged people not to get carried away by focusing only on wind energy, and insisted all forms of renewable energy should receive investment to contribute towards the national energy mix. “We need the whole concert of renewables,” he said.
