CAN (Climate Action Network) urge Belgium to lead the way on reduced GHG emissions

Posted by refer on 25/02/11

To mark the release of a report from CAN Europe, environmental NGOs have requested that Belgium, together with the EU, decide in favor of the move to a 30% reduction in Greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

The EU had previously commited itself to a 20% reduction by 2020 but now the European Commissioner, Günther Oettinger, has called for a more ambitious target to be set amongst fears that the threat of global warming was not being taken seriously enough by the EU.

The Belgian government has yet to publicly make any announcement regarding the CAN’s report but the organization itself and environmentalists alike are hoping that Belgium will lead the way and set an example for the rest of the EU by taking action and committing to the CAN’s newly proposed target.
